How It All Started
I’ve always loved to talk
I’ve always loved to talk and that started my journey in recruitment. It’s probably why my first job as a hotel receptionist suited me so well. It was through that role that I first encountered recruitment—not as a recruiter, but as a candidate. The agency that placed me in my hospitality roles must have spotted something in me because, after a few years, they approached me to join their team.
That’s how I found myself working for a worldwide recruitment agency. Over the next eight years, I worked my way up to Area Manager. It was an incredible learning experience, but I started to feel that the business was more about numbers than people. That didn’t sit right with me.
So, when redundancy came knocking, I decided to take the plunge and set up on my own.
The Highs and Lows of Running a Recruitment Agency
Let’s be honest—running a business isn’t easy. Since starting Perfect Recruitment, I’ve navigated a recession in 2008, had my second child in 2009, got divorced in 2016, survived COVID-19 and its impact on hospitality, and adapted to an ever-changing industry. Despite the challenges, my passion for recruitment has never wavered.
I started in hospitality recruitment because I knew the industry inside out, but over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to diversify into various markets with the help of some brilliant people.
The Reality of Recruitment—People, Problems & Priceless Moments
Recruitment is all about people, and that’s what makes it both rewarding and unpredictable. No two days are the same. I’ve heard every excuse under the sun for why someone didn’t show up for a shift—but one story will always stick with me.
A candidate once called to explain that he hadn’t made it to work because he had been kidnapped by Stella and held in a basement for several days. To this day, I’m still not sure if Stella was his girlfriend or the beer!
Why I Love What I Do
Even with the challenges, I wouldn’t change a thing. I love finding the perfect match between candidates and clients. Whether it’s placing a chef in their dream role or helping someone back into work after a career break, recruitment is about changing lives.
At Perfect Recruitment, we focus on people, not just numbers. That’s what sets us apart, and that’s why I love what I do. https://perfect-recruitment.co.uk/contact-us/
